The Reiki Precepts: 6 Daily Meditation

The Reiki Precepts are a set of guidelines by which we may live our lives, and combined with Reiki healing, offer us a path to enlightenment. Over the last few weeks, we have explored how we can put the Reiki Precepts into action.
The final guideline in the Reiki Precepts, literally translated, reads: “every morning and evening, put your palms together and read this rhyme”.

This Precept reminds us of the importance of ‘quiet time’. In the morning, we can use this time to prepare for the day ahead. Try it out for yourself: give yourself 15 minutes in the morning, to just sit, in silence, and prepare yourself for the wonderful day ahead of you. Perhaps, in the evening, you can find a little more time, to just sit, in silence.

Initially, when we sit, in a state of unconditional love and compassion, looking honestly at ourselves and our experiences, it can be emotionally overwhelming. Most of us have a backlog we need to clear. Buddhist philosophy speaks of negative and positive karma. The way to enlightenment (the end of suffering) is to clear negative karma and accrue positive karma. This practice of daily, honest self observation leads to a greater awareness of ourselves and how we interact with the world around us. Acting upon our observations (eg: giving thanks, saying sorry) helps balance our karma.

As we diligently practise this “mental and spiritual improving method”, our time spent in peaceful solitude becomes a pleasure, a necessity. Daily meditation becomes an essential element in the maintenance of our wellbeing and our continued self-development.
