The Reiki Precepts are a set of guidelines by which we may live our lives, and combined with Reiki healing, offer us a path to enlightenment. Over the last few weeks, we have been exploring how we can put the Reiki Precepts into action.
Today, let’s explore the Precept “be kind to people”.
This Precept reminds us to stay centred in our hearts and view the world around us with compassion. Have you noticed: when you’re in love and happy with someone they appear beautiful, and when you’re angry with them they appear unattractive? In reality, they haven’t changed at all. The way you view them has changed.
Extending compassion, to ourselves and others, can completely change our view of an experience. Without compassion, the father who beats his children is a cruel and wicked man. With compassion, he is the victim of ignorant parents, who did not teach him how to lovingly discipline his children.
How does viewing your life experiences from a place of compassion change your feelings on those experiences? How does it change the way you feel about the other people involved in those experiences?
Extending unconditional love and compassion to everyone you interact with will ease suffering and promote joy; in your life and in the lives of those around you. Next time you’re at the supermarket, maybe on the way home from work, feeling tired and hungry, have some compassion for the person on the check-out. They’ve spent eight hours in this environment you don’t want to be in for two minutes. They’ve had a constant stream of people pass through their day without saying a word to them. Simply making eye contact and saying ‘hi, how are you?’ could leave you both feeling human again!
