Reiki inspired by Buddhism: 1 The Eight Fold Path

The similarity between the Reiki Precepts and the Eight Fold Path although striking, is not surprising. Usui Sensei studied Buddhism and Reiki was born of Buddhist practice.
Reiki is both learned and experienced. You cannot become a Reiki practitioner just by reading a book. The same is true for Buddhism: reading the suttas and actually practising the teachings (Dhamma) is the only way.
The Reiki Precepts and Buddhism both promote mindfulness: that is being fully conscious of the self, at all times, on all levels. At first this may sound a little self-obsessed; but as we grow spiritually, and begin to recognise that on an energetic level we are all one; we realise becoming fully self aware is the most responsible action we can take, for the good of all.
‘Right intention’ is another precept of the Eight Fold Path. Right Intention is crucially important in Reiki practice. You must always work from a place of unconditional love and compassion. Your intent must always be ‘for the highest good’.
Reiki practice is greatly enhanced when coupled with Buddhist practice. Those of us who are fully committed to self-improvement benefit from studying both practices. Over the next few weeks, we will explore the Eight Fold Path.

Before we begin exploring the Eight Fold Path, we must first accept The Four Noble Truths (of Buddhism). The Four Noble Truths are:
All life is suffering. The cause of suffering is craving. The end of suffering comes with the release from craving. Release comes from following the Eight Fold Path.

The precepts of the Eight Fold Path are:
right understanding, right intention, right speech, right action
right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration

Walking the Eight Fold Path can help us in so many ways. Buddha taught these precepts to aid people on the path to enlightenment. In our modern western world, when so many of us suffer anxiety, depression and anger management issues, one could argue that the Eight Fold Path should form part of every state school’s curriculum!

Next week we will begin walking the Eight Fold Path.
