This week in our exploration of the Eight Fold Path and the Reiki Precepts we will see how all we have learnt so far culminates in ‘right concentration’.
In the Mahacattarisaka Sutta the Buddha gives a detailed explanation of the Eight Fold Path and explains how each of the eight factors work together.
In this sutta, right concentration is defined as: the unification of mind equipped with right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort and right mindfulness.
Buddha explains: “in one of right view, right intention comes into being; in one of right intention, right speech comes into being; in one of right speech, right action comes into being; in one of right action, right livelihood comes into being; in one of right livelihood, right effort comes into being; in one of right effort, right mindfulness comes into being; in one of right mindfulness, right concentration comes into being; in one of right concentration, right knowledge comes into being; in one of right knowledge, right deliverance comes into being” and “the many wholesome states that originate with right deliverance as condition come to fulfilment by development”.
So here, almost at the end of our exploration of the Eight Fold Path, we realise we have only just arrived at the beginning of our journey. The Eight Fold Path is our tool kit, with which we can investigate all things. When we investigate all things with right concentration, we see the truth in all things.
