Excerpt from Chapter ‘The Reiki Precepts’

The dictionary definition of precept is ‘rule of action’. So the Reiki Precepts are guidelines, which when acted upon, result in mental and spiritual improvement and physical well-being. The Reiki Precepts are a core component of Usui Sensei’s
Spiritual Healing Method. Integrating the Reiki Precepts into our way of being enables us:

  • to be guided by our emotions, not controlled by them
  • to be fully present in this moment now
  • to be objective and compassionate
  • to manifest a positive experience of reality.

Usui Sensei’s memorial stone quotes the Reiki Precepts and clarifies their usage:
“let (the student) chant the Five Precepts mornings and evenings, and keep them in mind: Firstly: Don’t get angry today, Secondly: Don’t worry today, Thirdly: Be grateful today, Fourthly: Work diligently today, Fifthly: Be kind to others today.
These are truly great teachings for cultivation and discipline in keeping with those great teachings of the ancient sages and the wise-men. Sensei named these teachings ‘the Secret Method of Inviting Blessings’ and ‘the Spiritual Medicine to cure many diseases’… when it comes to teaching, it should be as simple as possible and not difficult to understand… while sitting in silent meditation with your hands held in prayer and reciting the Five Precepts, a pure and healthy mind will be cultivated. It’s true value is in daily practice”.

Usui Sensei’s rather succinct usage instruction “Every morning and evening put your palms together and read the rhyme” has lead some to believe the Precepts are affirmations to be chanted, rather than guidelines to be acted upon. However, the memorial stone indicates the “true value is in daily practice”. Having reminded ourselves of the Precepts, by reading or chanting them, morning and evening, we then “keep them in mind” throughout our day. We live each day without succumbing to anger or worry. We work diligently. We act kindly and express gratitude. Life will still present us with challenges, thus Usui Sensei cautions us to practice the Precepts “no matter what happened”.

This is the go to manual for beginners and teachers alike. After being out of Reiki for many years and having originally trained with Jen i was taken back to feeling how it is to give and recieve Reiki both as a teacher and student. This manual is full of all the essential stuff that slipped out of my conscious memory over the years and reminded me of my lineage whilst filling in all of the gaps i needed filled so i could pass this knowledge on to my student. Thanks so much for the reminders and the deep history of usui reiki that you have collated. Im so glad to be updated and regrounded in this knowledge as it furthers the healing work we are all doing.

I’d just like to say many thanks for allowing me to try and get to know the art of Reiki. This is something I can’t do overnight. It takes more than one night to get the meaning of the history of Reiki and how Reiki can help me to make a better life for myself and the way I look at the world. If I need help with this in the future, I’ll get in touch. I’d also like to compliment you on your speedy postal service.
